1. Can you identify a Painted Lady or a Pearly Wood-Nymph? Monarch, A Game of Butterflies & Moths are playing cards that are a fun way to learn. Developed by Ruth Wheeler, this card game has been a family favorite for many years.
Monarch is a wonderful way to learn to identify many different butterflies and moths. Each of the 56 playing cards displays a full-color painting (by Nellie Wilkinson) of a species with family grouping listed.
Included in the directions are suggestions for several different card games to play at varying levels of difficulty. One basic game is to get a set of four cards in the same family. For young children the game could be played by only asking for the card number wanted. A more advanced version would be to ask by the name of the butterfly, either the scientific family name or its common name.
